Statement on the Prime Minister’s Decision to Prorogue Parliament
"The decision to prorogue Parliament by the Prime Minister means that our elected leaders will have limited time to listen to the people and pass relevant legislation to limit the possibility and impact of a “No-Deal” Brexit. As your Student Executive we would like to add our voice by arguing that this contravenes the democratic ability of us all to shape the future for our nation. Whatever your views, we feel these should be listened to and considered – not shut out and closed down.
We are aware that there are campaigns and events by which people are able to voice concerns and debate the current political situation. We would always encourage students to participate freely and openly in political debate and you should do that wherever you are – whether in Leeds, elsewhere in the UK or another country right now. Your views matter and your voice should be heard.
We are also aware of the parliamentary petition which is gathering pace nationally and would encourage students to consider if they wish to sign it (this is for UK residents only).
If you have any suggestions for how you would like us to respond to the current situation and represent you further then please get in touch.
If you have any worries or questions about how this may personally be affecting you then you can also contact our Help and Support Team."
