This week, policy was passed at both Better Union and University forums calling for more action on climate change. Throughout both forums there was a near unanimous decision to back two ideas: Should LUU support the activities of YouthStrike4Climate? and Should LUU lobby the University to declare a Climate Emergency?
Over the years, LUU has been at the forefront of supporting environmental issues, whether that be reducing single-use plastic or calling on the University to divest from fossil fuels. I’m happy to see both these ideas pass and looking forward to see LUU continue leading on these world-defining issues. As your Student Exec, we will continue working for you and lobby the University to declare a Climate Emergency at any opportunity we can, as well as supporting any students who want to campaign to take action on environmental issues.
This Friday, the next climate strike is taking place outside Leeds Civic Hall from 11am - 1pm. Show your support alongside other students, to call on the Council to rethink their decision to expand Leeds-Bradford airport, just weeks after declaring a climate emergency.
LUU will always continue to support students and groups who want to campaign around any issues. Just visit the Political Engagement Team in the Rep Room upstairs in the Union building, or chat to one of us - your Student Exec.
Your Union Affairs Officer,
