We’re pleased to announce that LUU was one of 20 students’ unions to be awarded as excellent by the NUS for our environment and sustainability actions during the 2018/2019 academic year.
The audit focused on sustainability over different categories from leadership and strategy to campaigning and influencing and measurable green outcomes.
Some of our green activities that were particularly commended included our Leave Leeds Tidy annual donation drive, which you as members have contributed to, donating a massive 17.5 tones of your unwanted things are going to help local communities within Leeds.
The auditor’s feedback commended the “inspiring approach to sustainability [...ensuring…] the work they do benefits not only their membership, but also the local community. [...] They have a real focus on developing an emotional connection with the current climate crisis.”
Lauren Huxley, your Union Affairs Officer said:
“We are so proud to be recognised for the hard work we have been putting in to ensure we are sustainable and making an environmentally positive impact, including the brilliant work of our Community Reps. We will continue to strive to improve, and are looking to train staff and volunteers in sustainability to ensure we’re always making the most environmentally conscious decisions.”
Rooted, our roof garden, was also mentioned for being a great space to ensure people could enjoy nature alongside some mindfulness at the same time. Alongwith teaching people how to grow their own produced our garden is as self-sustainable as possible and we use rainwater to feed our plants.
The Community Outreach Volunteers Blue Planet Party Exhibition was a particular highlight as a way of emphasising and educating the local community on the climate crisis. Your 18/19 Exec have also supported the YouthStrike4Climate protests and policy was unanimously passed for LUU to lobby the University to declare a climate emergency.
If you have any ideas on how your Union could improve in its environmental impact, you can submit it here.
