What we’re all about
The Horse Riding Club offer riding lessons for all abilities as well as great socials, days out and the chance to represent the University in one of three equestrian teams which compete in the BUCS league. Lessons and training are held at Harrogate Riding Centre which is just 30 minutes from Leeds (we provide transport).
We ride at a Harrogate Riding Centre, who have superb facilities including 2 large indoor arenas, 120 x40m outdoor arena, conference room and cross county course. We are very excited to offer lots of activities at Harrogate including Lessons, Horse Ball, cross country lessons, hacking and gymkhana fun days. We also organise trips throughout the year to various events such as Horse of the Year Show and Bramham Horse trials. We have regular socials, anything from nights out to wine and cheese evenings to our christmas meal out.
Give It A Go
Our spring GIAG is going to be held Saturday 2nd February If you've always wanted to give horse riding a go then this is the perfect opportunity to give it try!
Aimed at those who have very little/ no experience with horses this event will involve:
- Having a ride on one of our lovely horses
- Learning about horses and how to care for them
- A tour of the lovely Harrogate Riding Centre
- A jumping demonstration from some of our committee members
- Free lunch!!
We will provide all transport for the day - a bus will collect you from the Parkinson Steps at 9.30am and we will aim to drop you back at university by 4.00pm. Please be there before 9.30am as we will be departing promptly and do not want to leave you behind!
Lessons are offered every week and members can attend as often as they would like. Lessons are organised via this facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/115837242418600/ so please join that if you would like to get involved! Please note you will need to have bought membership to take part in our lessons.
Once a week we will post a lessons sign up post and you must comment below which lesson you wish to sign up to before the Sunday following. A confirmation post will then be posted to the group with the details of the confirmed lessons.
Once you receive a confirmation that you are booked onto a lesson then you can pay for your lesson on this website. Click 'shop' and then select the lesson you want to pay for. Please note, lesson times are assigned on a first come first served basis so check the facebook group regularly. Any questions, don't hesitate to email us or message us on facebook.
The levels and times of our lessons are described below (please note these times may change):
Beginner: Riders who have never ridden before or have barely ridden. Wednesday 2.30-3pm, Saturday 3-3.30pm.
Novice: Riders who can walk and trot and are learning to canter. Wednesday 2.30-3.30
Intermediate: Riders who can walk, trot, canter competently and are learning to jump. Saturday 3-4pm
Advanced: Riders who can walk, trot, canter and jump competently. Wednesday 2.30-3.30pm
We normally try to organise car shares to lessons, but if there aren't enough spaces the club will pay for a coach. Please let us know if you are a driver (and willing to drive people!) when you sign up for a lesson. We give drivers a discounted lesson price.
We have three teams (each of four riders) in the BUCS league, as well as a development team who compete against other universities. Team training takes place separately from normal lessons. It is once a week and each team has four competitions per year. Riders on teams can choose between the following training times: Wednesday 2.30-3.30pm, Thursday 6.30-7.30pm, Saturday 4-5pm. Competitions are on Wednesdays and require early starts so may require missing lectures 4 days a year.
Teams have already been decided for this academic year 2018/19.
Each team has four competitions per year (dressage and show jumping), one of which is hosted by us. See below for the dates of our home competitions. The host university provides horses, so you do not need your own horse to compete. Riders are randomly allocated one of four horses, and one rider from each team must ride each horse.
If you would like to help at one of the competitions or come and support our teams please get in touch, we would love to have you!
We also offer Horseball lessons and matches against other universities. For those of you new to Horseball it’s a game that’s something between rugby and basketball but all on horseback. It has been compared to quidditch but without all the extras. There are six members in a Horseball team, four on the pitch at a time. They have to pass a ball three times between three different team members before shooting through a 1m hoop, 5m off the ground. Players can also tackle each other to defend and steal the ball, just like in rugby, and line outs and other tactics are used to defeat the other team. Lessons are on a Saturday 3-4pm and cost £20. You don’t need any Horseball experience but riders must be intermediate or advanced level. We welcome you to join our Horseball taster session on Saturday 29th September. This will be a great introduction to the sport, tickets will be available on our 'shop' page.
Keep an eye on our facebook page for upcoming socials! In the past we have done a trip to HOYS, Ascot races, a Christmas gymkhana as well as nights out in Leeds.
Our first social of the year will be at the Old Bar pub quiz on Thursday 4th October! As this is our first social of the year you do not need to be a member to attend, just come along and get to know everybody. It will be held at Old Bar in the University Union. Keep an eye on our facebook page for more details coming soon!
Every Sunday the volunteering branch of our society organises trips to a local yard to help with the Riding for the Disabled Association lessons. This is a brilliant day out helping with children and ponies and looks great on the CV.
Membership for the year is £30 (or only £25 if you join in fresher's week) or just £20 if you join for one semester. The price covers free boot and hat hire, subsidised lessons and access to our socials. Our lessons cost from £14-£20 for a group lesson for up to an hour.
