What we’re all about
Please see our own website at www.luuhc.com for EVERYTHING you need to know! Below is just the nitty gritty & any other questions you may have are likely to be answered on the website.
At Leeds University Union Hiking club the outdoors is our passion and enabling you to explore it is our aim. Whether you enjoy a gentle stroll in the Yorkshire Dales, a demanding scramble along a Lakeland ridge or a winter epic in the Scottish Highlands, there is something for everyone. As an incredibly active club, we provide ample opportunities for you to leave the smoke behind and embrace the great outdoors...
Each Sunday we jump in coaches and head out into the beautiful countryside of the Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and North York Moors. There's always a variety of routes from a gentle walk to a day long hike and even the possibility of a scramble!
Weekend trips - bigger, badder and better!
Our weekends away are where the real fun starts. This semester, we are heading off to the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands and Snowdonia, and with more time available we really get stuck into the mountains.
The hikes on a weekend trip move into the mountaineering territory and are generally longer and more challenging than Sunday trips. We make sure all abilities are catered for by offering walks of varied difficulties. We also offer scrambling routes for those who want to get their hands on some rock and have a head for heights!
With incredible scenery, delicious food and great company what more could you ask for in a weekend!
Some scrambling fun!
Winter trips - the definition of epic!
Words can’t describe how much fun winter mountaineering is, so check out our video! (https://vimeo.com/210127516)
Our two winter trips are held in February, where we travel to Cairngorms and the Glencoe area in Scotland.
With snow and ice comes the need for ice axes and crampons both of which we can provide and our experienced leaders can teach you how to use them. By the end of the trip, you’ll feel like a true mountaineer.
Summer & Easter trips
Our Summer & Easter trips are generally longer (7-15 days) and the destinations vary from year to year. On past Easter trips we have spent a week in Snowdonia, Torridon and the Lake District. In Summer, we have been backpacking in the Lake District, camping in Glenshiel, Skye, Torridon and Glencoe. We also do international Summer trips: in the past we've done an epic 15 day trip exploring the mountains of central Norway, two weeks in the French Pyrenees, mountain hikes in the Austrian Alps and a two week trek in the wilds of Iceland. Last summer we set off for Swizerland for 2 weeks of hiking, scrambling and awesomeness! In 2019, we will be heading to Morocco in Easter, to have some more epic experiences!
There is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. — Sir Rannulph Fiennes
For everyone’s safety the club has rules on gear that you must have. Please refer to our website for a full & comprehensive kit list (http://www.luuhc.com/kit-equipment).
We cannot take people on hikes if they do not have the correct gear - it is at the discretion of the committee & leaders on the trip whether you are dressed appropriately and have the necessary gear (i.e. hiking boots, waterproofs, layers, food and drink), but if you follow the advice on the website there shouldn’t be any problems. We will not give refunds to those who come to the hikes unprepared. If you have any questions send us an email before a trip and we’ll be happy to help.

Sign up for trips and events takes place online. For Sunday trips, tickets are usually released 1 week in advance (from 8pm on Monday evenings). For Weekend and Winter trips, tickets are usually released 2 weeks in advance (from 8pm on Monday evenings). For Winter trips there will be an option to come for 2 days or for 3 days – please make sure you select the right option.

There’ll be quite a few options in the shop menu on the union website, so please be careful to select the right trip / product to add to basket. After doing so, there will be a few questions that you'll need to answer, via drop down menus before you pay. Please pay particular attention to them, but don't be too slow, as you're place will not be reserved until you've paid.
You can buy tickets here on the Leeds University Union website Hiking 'Shop' page at www.luu.org.uk/groups/hiking.
Tickets will be available for 24 hours after their release time, but please note that tickets are sold on a first come, first serve basis, so if you are unable to buy a ticket within the 24 hours, and see the notice ‘purchasing limit reached’ on the union website, they are probably sold out.
If you don't manage to get a ticket, do not despair! You can email the secretary who can put you on the reserve list and get in touch with you should anyone drop out. To email the secretary to be put on the reserve list, or to ask any questions about sign up for trips, please contact email@example.com.
